CAP GREEN’S CLEANUP AND ONGOING ECO PROJECT AT SANDRINGHAM HIGH

Sandringham High School in Johannesburg is currently undergoing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the committed work of CAP Green, a local environmental initiative championing sustainability, urban greening, and youth-led change.

WHO IS CAP GREEN?

CAP Green is a Johannesburg-based non-profit focused on empowering communities—especially schools—to become stewards of their environment. Through cleanups, greening projects, recycling education, and indigenous planting, the organization is helping reshape how young people engage with the urban ecosystem.

THE SANDRINGHAM HIGH INITIATIVE

CAP Green began work at Sandringham High in 2025, and they are still actively working on site today. Their efforts have included:

🔹 Major Campus Cleanup

Volunteers from the school and the community joined CAP Green to clear litter, remove debris, and reclaim neglected parts of the schoolyard. Pathways, sports fields, and garden beds were all targeted in the cleanup.

🔹 Greening and Indigenous Planting

Dozens of trees and indigenous plants have been introduced to the school environment. These plantings are aimed at increasing shade, reducing soil erosion, and improving the school’s overall aesthetic and ecological health.

🔹 Environmental Education

CAP Green runs interactive, ongoing eco-workshops with students, teaching them the basics of recycling, composting, and how to care for the plants they’ve helped put into the ground.

THE WORK CONTINUES

CAP Green’s presence at Sandringham High is not a once-off intervention—it is part of a longer-term partnership. The team continues to work weekly on site, maintaining plant beds, supporting student eco-clubs, and planning future infrastructure improvements like rainwater collection and compost systems.

A student-led “Green Team” has now been formed at the school to work alongside CAP Green and keep the movement alive. This partnership between learners and environmental professionals ensures skills transfer, sustainability, and school pride.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Cleaner, safer spaces boost morale and student wellbeing.
  • Real-world environmental learning complements classroom education.
  • Ongoing mentorship builds capacity for self-sustaining green leadership.

LOOKING AHEAD

LOOKING AHEAD

With CAP Green still on the ground, Sandringham High is becoming a flagship example of how schools can lead the way in urban environmental care. The hope is that this model spreads—not just across Johannesburg, but across the country.
